Manhattan Sports Center – The third prize

The project won the third place- ManhattanCall Competition 2019.

Description:
The plot is situated in Madison Avenue encompassed by traditional, mixed, gothic, utilitarian and contemporary architectural styles. The idea behind the design is to show the connection between all the Architectural styles encompassing the plot utilizing iconic, yet context friendly design. Our approach was to create a contemporary design to remind us of the past by using elements from the era that Manhattan grew in. One of the most famous milestones in Manhattan is the George Washington suspension bridge interfacing Manhattan and New Jersey. Suspensions structure helps furnishing long spans with fewer columns that caused it to appear to be reasonable for a sports hall. The structure was picked referring to George Washington Bridge in NYC. Steel Beams with 30 meter span were fitted on steel segments from one side while the opposite side is held by rods associating the bar with similar steel segments. Rods were utilized from the opposite side interfacing beams corner to corner to opposed bending force. For the lower floors typical reinforced concrete framework were used with ranges not surpass 10 meters. Functions of the sport center were disseminated to save a view to the game field from any area inside the structure, along these lines the field was situated in the middle while different functions are on the ground floor in the sides of the structure with an immediate view to the field. Free space was included between the fitting spaces for the players’ heating up activities. We created two entrances in which one side is open for public users; it includes access to the restaurant. Meanwhile, the other entrance is for players and staff. The layering configuration of the building’s design maintains a degree of transparency while the elevation continues changing as walking by which created a form of a unique experience for the end-users. The interior design of the building abides by a minimalist approach that highlights for the most part in the building in addition to the green walls that indeed revive the domain. Likewise, we picked the boldest interior elevation to be composed of a graffiti wall for the network volunteers. Furthermore, we decided to have stairs associating fitting rooms to the field to create a sense of professionalism to amateur players. The building is designed to be affected by community. Thus, the provisions of interior graffiti walls that can be painted on allow the community to practice old traditions as done with the elevation of the Patrick Henry Preparatory school. We attempted to make an ecofriendly plan that fits in the context of the neighborhood’s heritage and be versatile enough to the consistent difference in Manhattan’s setting. The tensile structure utilized in the plan is normally utilized for scaffolds and bridges but unlikely in buildings. The choice of structure helped fitting glazed rooftops, automated louvers and that aide in the process of permitting daylight into the structure, likewise; helped in using interior green walls for a more ecofriendly approach. Moreover, it aided in controlling slops of rooftop to direct water into the reservoir. For the materials, steel, solid, wood and glazing were used, in addition to terracotta for certain zones of the curtain panels to supplant the glaze in private spaces. We modified the streetscape experience by broadening the width of the walkway and enhancing greenery of the pedestrian path. Strolling by the auxiliary bends in the building itself communicates the element of motion and consequently adds to the experiential worth. The bars holding the structure in its place opposing the bending force brought about by wind additionally makes a stylishly satisfying view for the bystander.
